Dear Honorable Judge Clemons,

We, the undersigned, are writing this letter in support of Mumia Abu-Jamal’s request for an evidentiary hearing and a new trial.

We are asking that Mr. Abu-Jamal’s constitutional and human right to a fair trial not be ignored at this moment.

It would be an egregious injustice to dismiss the important evidence that had been buried by the District Attorney for 38 years.

In this moment, history has brought us back to the crossroads where justice and truth meet.  While sitting in a Birmingham jail, Dr. Martin Luther King wrote, “justice delayed is justice denied”.

After 40 years, Mr. Abu Jamal’s case should not be an example of justice denied.

During your inspiring statement for the Racial Justice and Healing Commission of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, you said:

“It is never too late to do the right thing… When you are in a position to stop something wrong, you do it.”
— Lucretia Clemons

Your words stand in the spirt of justice, speak truth to power, and display your love for justice and fairness.

Love in action has the power to heal.  Our humanity calls us to be a living embodiment of the principles you so beautifully expressed.

This moment calls for the display of healing the wrongs of discrimination, racial bias, and unfairness. Justice and “doing the right thing” means granting Mumia Abu-Jamal the opportunity to have a fair hearing.
